Listen to Episode 1 of the TebZAR Podcast
In Episode 1 of the TebZAR Podcast, renowned conversation strategist Nozipho Tshabalala joins TebZAR for a reflective discussion on purpose, leadership and the power of intentional dialogue. From humble beginnings in Pietermaritzburg to global stages, Nozipho’s journey captures the essence of resilience and the pursuit of significance over success.
From Grassroots to Global Influence
Nozipho was raised by a street vendor mother and a factory worker father who later became a security guard. Her upbringing was grounded in faith, humility and education. “My grandmother was my first teacher in resilience,” she recalls. Her mother’s late-in-life return to school inspired Nozipho to embrace lifelong learning, leading her to earn multiple degrees including master’s qualifications in diplomacy and development finance. She is now pursuing a PhD to deepen her contribution to the world of strategic dialogue.
Becoming a Conversation Strategist
Her career began in the Presidency, followed by roles at Tata and CNBC Africa before she found her calling. During a live event she was invited to moderate a discussion, and it changed her life. “I realised I had treated my gift like a gig,” she says. Stepping out on faith, she founded her firm and coined the term conversation strategist, transforming moderating from a side hustle into a profession that drives measurable impact. Today her firm facilitates high-level conversations for the United Nations, World Bank, IFC and global corporates.
Purpose, Fear and the Courage to Be Seen
Nozipho believes that progress begins with the courage to be seen. “People think they fear failure but what they really fear is being seen,” she explains. Her approach to conversation is about asking catalytic questions that shift mindsets and create pathways for strategic change. Through her work she encourages individuals and nations to move from talking to doing, from policy to performance.
Excellence as a Choice
Reflecting on South Africa’s potential she challenges citizens to choose excellence daily. “Complacency is a choice just like corruption and excellence are choices,” she says. True transformation she believes begins at an individual level with intention, integrity and the will to act.
A Call for Connection
Her message to South Africans is clear: start bridging divides in everyday life. Invite difference into your home, your workplace and your social circles. “We can’t build a united nation without conversation,” she reminds listeners.
